Jamaica Archives & Records Department
AUDIO VISUAL UNIT

The Audiovisual Unit was established as a result of the divestment of the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) in 1997. The collection was given into the custody of the Jamaica Archives & Records Department under the GOJ/JBC/RJR Heads of Agreement (1997) Clause 6.4 which states inter alia…”that the video library and archives belonging to the JBC shall be vested in the Archivist pursuant to the Archives Act…”

The JBC archival collection consists mainly of a collection of transmitted programmes covering news, documentaries, commentaries and analyses.  There is also a wide variety of magazine and discussion programmes covering issues on both retrospective and contemporary life in many areas.  In addition, the collection contains historical footage on important events such as elections and special parliamentary sessions, state visits and state funerals.  The collection spans the period from the late 1970’s to 1997 and is restricted only to those materials received by the Archives Department at the time of the divestment; bearing in mind that not all the materials produced by the JBC over the years are currently within our custody.
